It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our husband, father, grandfather, and brother Guy Maurice Dufour, 76, a resident of the Northside Community Guest Home, on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with his wife Ursula and daughter Fleur by his side.
Guy was born and raised in Rimouski, Que., he was a son of the late Paul and Ida (Verrault) Dufour, he was the second of 10 children. In his youth, Guy worked on the DEW line in the high arctic as an aircraft mechanic, later followed a teaching career in the sub arctic and remote villages along Bas St. Laurent. He moved to Cape Breton in 1981 with his wife and baby daughter and worked as a French teacher at the Canadian Coast Guard College, then as a supply teacher for various schools in the Cape Breton District. He returned to the North for brief periods to teach for the Cree School Board in James Bay.
In his prime Guy was a real “Mr. Fix It” and he had a never ending supply of jokes and stories to tell, about his life of adventure.
Guy is survived his wife, Ursula; his daughter Fleur, and by the joy of his life the past few years — his three grandchildren, five-year old Zachary, three-year Demini and two-year old Chloe, also by his eight surviving siblings, residing in Quebec.
Besides his parents Guy was predeceased by a brother Jacques and his son in law Jaret Johnson.
A visitation will be held 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A memorial mass will be celebrated at a later date in Eskasoni with Rev. Martin MacDougall and Rev. Bernie MacDonald officiating. Burial of Guy’s ashes to take place at the family burial plot in Rimouski, Que., sometime in October.
