It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Frances Alice Parsons, formerly of Cartier Street and Williston House, on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay.
Born in Jeffery’s, NL, on October 21, 1916, she was the daughter of the late George N. and Sarah Shears.
Frances received her early education in Newfoundland. She attended Carlton University in Ottawa and was a graduate of Douglas Psychiatric Hospital, Verdun, Quebec. Frances was a veteran of the Second World War and a life member and past executive member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, Sydney. During the war, she contracted tuberculosis and spent many years in hospitals in Montreal and Cornwallis, NS. She returned to Sydney and worked at the Credit Union, helping students, who attended Sydney and area schools, open savings accounts. Frances attended Business College and at one time, owned and operated a convenience store on Upper Prince Street. She was a former member of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church and upon its closing became a member of Church of Christ the King. She spent many happy summers fishing in Newfoundland and Gabarus.
For 53 years, Frances resided at the home of Mary and Wilfred Hawco. Affectionately known as Aunt Fanny, Gran and Wilma, she will be missed by her loved ones, Frances (Hawco) and her husband, John MacNeil, their children, Jessica and Shaun. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews from Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, as well as the family of her dear friend, the late Mary Hawco, Audrey Martell and family and Patricia Hawco and family.
Besides her parents, Frances was predeceased by her brothers, Howard, Llewelyn O. ‘Lou’, George D. and Bissett; and sisters, Annie, Jennie, Viola D., Martha and Effie.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Church of Christ the King on Monday at 11 a.m., with Rev. Fred Rhymes officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
