It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Edward Joseph ‘Pee Wee’ Spencer. Edward passed away Monday, Sept. 5, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital with his loving family at his side.
Born in Glace Bay, May 24, 1936, he was the son of the late George and Mabel (Clarke) Spencer, was a member of St. John’s Church, and was employed with Devco for 30 years.
Dad had a great passion for life and lived it to the fullest. He enjoyed his time spent hunting and fishing at Red Point in Iona with his brother-in-law and best friend, the late Gerald ‘Buzzy’ Burns. Dad also enjoyed going to bingo with his daughter Ann Marie and could often be caught playing the poker machines at the Radio Club with his son and partner in crime Joseph.
Dad’s smile and sense of humour were contagious. His greatest joy in life was his family. His children and grandchildren did no wrong (in his eyes).
Dad leaves behind the love of his life Annie who he married 55 years ago. Mom and dad’s love showed on their faces and warmed the hearts of those they loved.
Also surviving are their six children, sons, Joseph (Norma), Alphonse (Noel), Tommy (Anita); daughters, Ann Marie (Junior), Debbie (Blair), Veronica (Alfred); 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sisters, Rhoda, Mellissa, Jeanie, Vangie; brothers, Lawrence and Tommy; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents Pee Wee was predeceased by brothers, Raymond, Freeman, Robert, sisters, Lena and Shirley.
Visitation for Edward will be held Wednesday, Sept. 7, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, in the funeral home chapel with Fr.Leo Boone officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
At this time, we, Ed’s family, would like to sincerely thank the staff and residents of Victoria Haven Nursing Home for the care and compassion given to our dad during his time there as a resident, with a special thank you to his friend Becky.
The greatest gift I ever had came from God; I called him Dad.
A smile on his face
A twinkle in his eye
A heart full of love
He will never die.
