It is with deep sorrow we announce the death of our beloved grandmother and aunt, Rita Mary Young, age 95, a longtime resident of North Sydney, on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at the Northside General Hospital, following a short illness.
Born on Disraeli Street, North Sydney, Rita was the daughter of the late John W. and Christina (Hood) Young.
Rita worked her whole life up to the age of 65. She held many positions in various stores in North Sydney. Her last employment was at the glebe house at St. Stephen Church in Florence, where she worked as the housekeeper for over 16 years for Rev. Raymond MacDonald.
She enjoyed going to the North Sydney Pensioners Club and socializing, loved music, dancing, playing a game of cards, having a cup of tea and telling a good joke. She would put a smile on anyone’s face with her humour and positive spirit. She was the Toronto Blue Jays number one fan, and a nighthawk who would watch TV late into the night.
Rita was a devout Catholic and was unfortunate to lose her only daughter Yvonne Marie Young, whom she so dearly loved, at an early age.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
Rita is survived by her grandson, Allan Gray and his family, his wife Delnnis and daughters, Daniela and Yvonne. Also mourning her loss are her close nieces and nephews from the Vickers family, Sharon Johnston, Cathy Smith, Dave Vickers and godson Tim Vickers. She also leaves behind several grandnieces and grandnephews.
Besides her parents and her daughter Yvonne, she was predeceased by her sisters, Dorothy ‘Dot’ Vickers and Julia Young, brothers, Jim, Lloyd and Eldridge Young
Visitation for Rita will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., today (Thursday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
