UPSHALL, George Lewis – Passed away suddenly on December 3, 2008, George Lewis Upshall at 84 years, after his final battle following a series of illness. A proud soldier to the end, George served honourably in World War II entering at the age of 15 defending against tyranny in North Africa and Italy. Predeceased by his brother, Joe. He leaves to mourn his partner of 20 years, Phyllis Schwerdtfeger. Also leaving to mourn the loving mother of his children, Virtue Upshall; his children: Wayne, Ron (Iris), Jeannie (Paul), Barbara (Brian), Bonnie (Del), Gary, Roger (Nathalie), Cathy (Jim). Sadly leaving behind fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Always remembered, always loved, forever in our hearts by your sisters and brothers: Blanche White, Florence Legge, Nelson (Ethel), Douglas, Ralph (Doreen), Gerald (Sadie). George Upshall was a life member and trustee of Branch #1 of the Royal Canadian Legion. He served on many committees and also served as a member of Honours and Awards for Provincial Command 166th Field Artillery Newfoundland Regiment. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caring members of Branch #1 of the Royal Canadian Legion for their decades of warm friendship and support to George. Special recognition and thanks to Lorne Gracie and his wife Judy, whom he viewed as his own children. The family would also like to extend sincere thanks for the wonderful care and compassion George received from the capable hands of the medical and support staff at St. Clare’s Hospital. Special thanks to the Staff at DVA Pavillion. As well, the children are most grateful for the support they received during his hospitalization. Visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Friday, December 5 and Saturday, December 6 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral service to take place on Monday, December 8, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Field of Honor.
