Julia Degruchy
(Jewel) Durnford Passed from this life with grace and courage surrounded by her loving family on February 20, 2008 at the Glenbrook Lodge, St. John's, NL. Born in Rencontre West, NL, July 29, 1920, Jewel married "the love of her life" Philip George DeGruchy on October 11, 1942 and emigrated to Canada, residing for the next 22 years in Dartmouth, NS. During this time, Julia was an active member of St. Luke's Anglican Church Choir, and the Westwood Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. In 1964 the DeGruchy's took up residence in St. John's, NL when Dominion Stores took ownership of Ayre's Supermarkets. Julia enjoyed being back in NL and the companionship of many friends. The family particularly enjoyed spending time at their cabin at Hodgewater Line, and upon Phil's retirement, they built a permanent home there, where gardening and welcoming friends and family became Jewel's pastime. In later years they lived at Masonic Park until Phil's death in 1999. Jewel contended the worst thing he ever did was die and leave her. Jewel is mourned by two daughters - Eva Moore of Stephenville and Gloria Winters (George) of St. John's; three grandchildren - Philip Winters (Lori Clarke), Chris Winters, both of St. John's and Julia Beth Moore of London, UK; great-grandchildren Curtis and Hannah Winters; brother Eric Durnford of Port aux Basques, and sister Eva Bagnell of Halifax, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Phil, she was predeceased by her parents John Matthew and Olive Durnford, brother Fred Durnford, sisters Ada Pike and Ida Hillier. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the exceptional staff of Glenbrook Lodge for their compassionate, loving care of Julia. A celebration of Julia's life will take place at Barrett's Chapel, 328 Hamilton Ave., Tuesday, March 4 at 11 a.m. Major Bernice Oliver officiating. Family flowers only. Remembrances in her name may be made to Glenbrook Lodge Residents Fund, or the Stephenville Theatre Festival. Please visit www.barretts.ca to sign the online memorial guest book.
