BALMAIN, GERTRUDE MAY (LESLIE) - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear Mother, Gertrude May (Leslie) Balmain on Friday, September 9, 2011 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital (DECH). Gertrude was born February 4, 1921 in Fredericton, N.B. to the late Mary Jane (Davidson) and Herbert Leslie. She married Hanford (Hank) Balmain of Scotchtown, N.B. in 1949. She was predeceased by her husband, her brother Walter, her sisters Marjorie Trites and Flora Poole. She is survived by her children John, David (Merle) and Jane Ann (Alan) Sears all of Fredericton and grandchildren Jennifer (Michael) Wilkins, Kathryn (Cedric) Johnston, Matthew (Jenny) Sears and Rebekah Sears. She was also blessed with three great granddaughters, Cara and Kallie Sears and Leah Wilkins. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Gertrude graduated in 1942 from Fredericton High School and in 1946 from Victoria Public Hospital School of Nursing. Her nursing career began at Victoria Public Hospital and she retired in 1986 from the DECH. Colleagues and patients alike were touched by her positive attitude and contagious sense of humour. Her laughter was heard throughout the corridors of the hospital long before she was seen. She was a life-long member of Brunswick Street Baptist Church.
Visitation will be at McAdam's Funeral Home, York Street, Fredericton on Monday, September 12th from 4 to 8 pm. Memorial service will take place on Tuesday, September 13th at 1:00 pm at the Brunswick Street Baptist Church with a reception to follow. There will be a family committal service at the Scotchtown Rural Cemetery. Donations to the Brunswick Street Baptist Church Building Fund or the Scotchtown Rural Cemetery would be appreciated.
