THOMSON, Walter Hiltz - 83, of Port Williams, Nova Scotia, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2011 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Port Williams, he was a son of the late Cecil and Lillian (Hiltz) Thomson. Upon leaving Port Williams, he worked in New Brunswick for 16 years as a mechanic and also served in the Merchant Navy for 11 years. He served as a corporal in the Reserve Army, Signal Squadron for 10 years and sailed on the Irving Stream, a shallow draft bulk carrier, out of Nassau. He served with the Canadian Coast Guard for 11 years, sailing on the Edward Cornwallis, the Sir John A. MacDonald and the Alert, retiring in 1982 due to ill health. He also spent time at various outposts throughout the D.E.W. Line and during his seagoing career, visited many ports of call throughout the world. He is survived by his first wife, Frances Brawn; his children, Deborah, Robie, Charles and Walter; step-children, Margaret and Michael; sisters, Mary and Carol (Frank); a brother, William (Vera); a sister-in-law, Eleanor Thomson; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his second wife, Boneta; a step-daughter, Brenda; sisters, Margaret, Greta and Rhoda; brothers, Charles, Curtis and Murray. As per Walter’s wishes, his body has been donated to Dalhousie Medical Research. There will be no visitation, by request. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2011 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Elizabeth Johnson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation, Fox Hill Cemetery or the charity of your choice.
