Stewart, Vera Constance – 82, Truro – following a brief illness, it is with heavy hearts that the family of Vera Stewart announce the passing of a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend on September 10, 2011, at Colchester Regional Hospital in Truro. Vera was born in East Waldeck (Deep Brook), Annapolis County.
She taught elementary school for 36 years – most of those years being in Bible Hill schools. She retired in 1988 from Bible Hill Central.
After her retirement, she spent countless hours volunteering and being involved in many organizations including Hilden and Bible Hill Garden Clubs, Team SOS Dragon Boat, Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition, IODE, Hilden Fire Hall Auxiliary, Brookfield Baptist Church, Colchester Regional Hospital (art exchange, gift shop, information desk, and Hub Bub). She could often be found at the mall selling tickets and raising awareness for these and other various groups.
Vera enjoyed spending time at Shortt's Lake and loved baking for family, friends, and charitable organizations.
The family would like to thank many people for helping during this difficult time, especially; Dr. Padmore, the nurses of 3 North, Rev. Eric MacKinnon, and Anita Miller. A special thank you goes out to June and Charles Cox for lovingly adopting and giving her dog, Jade, a new home.
She is survived by sons Gary (Reny), Brookfield; Dana (Anne DuGas), North River; Earl (Angie), Milford; grandchildren, Dawn, Michelle, Sara, Paul, Laura and Brooke; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Jessica, and Cohen; brother, Wendell Robbins; son-in-law, Mike Watson; sister-in-law, Joyce Robbins, and her beloved dog, Jade, who she could often be found walking around Kiwanis Pond.
Aside from her parents, James and May (Chute) Robbins, she is predeceased by daughter, Ruth Watson; brother, Charles Robbins; sister-in-law, Gail Rector; and granddaughter, Lindsey Stewart.
There will be no funeral service by request. A reception to celebrate Vera's life will be held Wednesday, September 14, from 6pm to 8pm at the Hilden Fire Hall. Family flowers only.
Donations may be made to the SPCA of Colchester, the Truro Community Workshop, or a charity of your choice.
Continuing in her spirit of giving, Vera has donated her remains to Dalhousie Medical School for research and educational purposes.
