Passed on: September 12th, 2011

Edith MacLeod, 98, passed away peacefully, at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney, on Monday, Sept. 12, 2011.
Born in Sydney, Edie was the daughter of the late Herbert T. And Janet M. (Rood) Ripley. She was the last surviving member of her family.
Edie graduated from Sydney Academy and attended the Provincial Normal College in Truro. In her later life, she furthered her education at Xavier Junior College. Edie taught school in Nova Scotia for almost 35 years. She began her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in Sheet Harbour. After three years in the Sheet Harbour area, Edie returned to Sydney and spent many years teaching in the Sydney school system. Upon her retirement, Edie continued working in the education field teaching the GED program.
For many years, Edie had been an active member at Trinity United Church, where she taught Sunday school and played the piano. She worked hard as one of the founding members of the Regional Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered for many other causes in the community.
After her retirement, Edie enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and late sister-in-law, Greta Carmichael and attending hockey games with her husband, Mac. For the last 16 years, Edie had been a resident of the Cove Guest Home, where she received loving care and attended activities.
We are very grateful, as well, for the hours that Cove volunteer, Florence Power, spent with Edie.
Edie is survived by daughters, Fern Mollon and Laurel (Mike) Kuna, both of Sydney; sons, Blayne (Karen), Ridgetown, Ont., and Mal (Janet), Hammonds Plains, N.S.; eight grandchildren, Alisa, Jeannine, Heather, Jennifer, Robert, Douglas, Mary and Aaron; and six great-grandchildren, Drew, Keegan, Kaelan, Ava, Ashton and Brayden. As well, she is survived by her brother-in-law, Gordon MacPherson and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Edie was predeceased by her husband, Mac MacLeod in 2002, brothers, Laun and Lewis, sisters, Zeta Anderson, Edna Antonelli, Ethel MacLeod, Hazel Andrews and Beatie MacPherson, and son-in-law, Art Mollon.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Trinity United Church on Thursday, 2 p.m., with Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
