It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of Sarah ‘Sadie’ MacPherson on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2011, at the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home. She died as she lived, peacefully and with dignity.
She was born Jan. 6, 1920, to Laughlin and Margaret (MacLean) Livingstone in Orangedale, N.S.
Sadie graduated from Nova Scotia Normal College and taught in communities in Inverness County. Later, she worked for several years in Boston and New York before returning to Nova Scotia.
In 1954, she married Russell MacPherson and moved to the Sydney area where they raised their family. In later years, she worked as a substitute teacher.
She was an active member of the United Protestant Church of Sydney River and served as a church elder, member of the Board of Stewards and UCW.
Sadie took great pride in her home and gardens, and will be remembered for her homemade bread and special gifts of wild strawberry jam. She loved the outdoors, especially walking, picking berries and fishing.
She took great pleasure in many simple things in life like enjoying a cup of black tea from a china mug or playing cards with family and friends.
Sadie was blessed with a loving family, wonderful friends and neighbours, and in recent years, compassionate care givers.
She will be dearly missed by her children, Jesslyn (Dennis) Steele, Cleveland, N.S., Alfred, Halifax, and Allyson (Patrick) Lord, Brooklin, Ont. She is also survived by her sister, Katherine Rowlings, Portsmouth, N.H.; sisters-in- law, Jessie Livingstone, Sydney, and Rita Livingstone, Bedford; and many nieces and nephews. She was a much beloved Nana to Michael and Kate Steele, and Sarah, Emma and Ethan Lord.
Sadie was predeceased by her husband, Russell MacPherson, daughter, Marlene and brothers, Hugh, David, Roddie, Charlie and Alex.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, 4-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the United Protestant Church of Sydney River on Saturday, 2 p.m., with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
