Alvina Toth

Mrs. Alvina Toth (nee Frey), aged 89 years, of Watrous, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully on Monday, April 4, 2011 at Watrous Union Hospital. Alvina was born May 24, 1921, on the Guernsey area family farm to Christine & Otto Frey. She was the first of four, followed by Harold, Frieda & Irene. She left school to help with the farm and then went on to provide domestic help in the Simpson, Nokomis and Earl Grey communities. During this time Alvina, Harold Frey and Bruno Morelli formed their orchestra & played many local dances. Alvina always longed to be a nurse and in 1947 was accepted into nursing school in Hamilton, Ontario. After graduation she worked at the Sanatorium in Hamilton before returning to Saskatoon where she held positions at the Sanatorium and Royal University Hospitals.

Alvina and Joe Toth were married on June 10, 1953. They had 2 sons, Bryan (Sandi) and Russell, followed by 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Joe & Alvina lived in Saskatoon, Salmon Arm & Dawson Creek before returning to Watrous, making many friendships along the way.  She had a joyful & hospitable nature, especially towards kids; and she was known for babysitting, baking and most notably her button accordion playing. Suffering paralysing injuries in a motor vehicle accident in 2001, Alvina became restricted in activities; but her will and spirit kept Alvina engaged with life and enjoying her harmonica.

She was predeceased by her husband Joe and parents Christine and Otto; and is survived by 2 sons, Bryan (Sandi) and R.J.; 6 grandchildren Vali (Aron), Chad (Tricia), Kurt (April), Cale (Meredith), Julian and Emily and 3 great grandchildren Chloe, Greta and Corbin. Also surviving are her siblings, Harold Frey, Frieda McWillie and Irene Bird. The Funeral Service was held in Watrous Civic Centre on
Saturday, April 9th and was officiated by Pastor Doug Shepherd. Pastor Doug Gregory also took part in the service by reading scripture. Honorary Pallbearers were all of Alvina’s friends.
