SAULNIER, Lawrence Joseph “Laurie” — 79, of Falmouth, Hants County died Tuesday, September 13, 2011 in the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Walter and Catherine Saulnier. Following his secondary schooling Laurie attended St. Mary’s University where he received his business degree. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, and had a wonderful sense of humour. Laurie spent 30 years working for the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission in the Halifax area, and was Store Manager for several of those years. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 009, Windsor. Laurie was an athlete, outdoorsman, and educator for much of his life. He was an expert marksman who began his shooting career as the youngest member of the Halifax Gun Club in 1946 at the age of 14. By 16 he had won his first Maritime Championship and over the next 11 years captured 24 individual Nova Scotia Maritime Skeet and Trap Shooting Championships. After retiring from competitive shooting, Laurie became an advocate for firearms education, and in 2011 marked his 35th year as a volunteer provincial Hunter Education Instructor for the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources. Some of Laurie’s happiest moments were spent teaching children how to fish, and stay safe in the woods. For many years Laurie enjoyed hunting, fishing, and travelling to Mexico with his wife Margaret. He was a founding member and past president of the Hants West Wildlife Association, and served on the executive of the Nova Scotia Wildlife Federation. Laurie is survived by his wife, Margaret (Pulsifer); sisters, Frances Power (Peter), Portugese Cove and Evelyn Tucker (George), Toronto; children, David Saulnier, Arichat; Pamela Bowlby (Kirk), Canaan; Daniel Saulnier (Vena), Germany; Lynn Oatway, Sackville; step-children, Mark Pulsifer (Elizabeth), Antigonish; Shelley Shaw (Rob), Martock; Greg Pulsifer (Belinda), Berwick; Esther Baxter (Greg), Sackville; several grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his former wife, Sylvia Redden. Cremation has taken place. There was no visitation by request. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 16, 2011 in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. Rev. Michael Walsh officiating. A private family burial was held in Windsor Forks Community Cemetery, Windsor Forks, Windsor.
