Norman Walter Fryklund
Our 94 year old historian passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital. Dad was born on December 12, 1916, to Emma and Hilbert Fryklund on his paternal grandparents John and Maritt Fryklund’s farm at Section 27, Twp 15, Range 27, West of the 2nd, in the Archive District. He was the second oldest of six siblings. Raised by his grandparents from 3 years of age, he developed a lasting love for horses, cattle and farming. He attended Brookfield and Thompson Lake School. At nine years of age he was re-united with his parents and siblings in Moose Jaw. He attended King Edward and Empire School. Over the next ten years he worked on various cattle ranches, and “rode the rails” to Ontario for employment. He learned from that experience he did not like heights especially straddling a Box Car over trestles. Shortly thereafter he returned to Moose Jaw and was employed as a cattle buyer with Canadian Swifts. During this time he met and married Phyllis Reid. They had two children prior to Dad serving in WWII with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in England. Upon his return in 1946, they added two more children to their family. In 1947, Dad began working for the Canadian Pacific Railway. He retired in 1981 as a Conductor on the VIA Passenger. Dad was our historian, our library who shared his wisdom and knowledge willingly, as well as his love of reading, music, nature, Swedish and Ukrainian Cuisine and Coke A Cola. Predeceased by his wife, Phyllis; daughter, Carol; his parents; brothers, Lyle, Arnold, Bruce, Baby boy and sister Ruthie. He leaves to mourn daughter Lynn; son Brian (Terri) of Regina; son Blaine (Roxana) of Swift Current; his very close companion, Rosalyn New; Ron (Jenny) of Moose Jaw as well as 22 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. A sincere thank you to Dr. Majid, Dr. Braun, Nurse Keith and staff at the Union Hospital, Pharmacists and staff at Rexall Drug Store. A Celebration of Dad’s Life will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 1:30 pm. Rev. Bob Langdon will officiate. Royal Canadian Legion Funeral Rites will be conducted by Bert Longhurst. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers you may wish to contribute to Ducks Unlimited, P.O. Box 4465, Regina, SK, S4R 8P8, in memory of Dad’s love of grasslands, wetlands, geese and deer. In living memory of Norm, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
