NEW GLASGOW – Hugh Joseph “Joe” Izzard Sr., age 73, New Glasgow, passed away suddenly Monday, September 19, at home.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Joseph D. and Winnifred Madelaine (Davisen) Izzard.
Joe joined the Army at the age of 20 and served three years. Joe played in the ABC Band years ago. He worked at St. Martha’s Hospital in the late 60’s until 1976, moving to New Glasgow where he worked at Trenton Steel and Chignecto School Board until he retired in 1987. Joe was very active in the church and choir. He loved to sing and play music.
Hugh Joseph “Joe” is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Alice (Jordan); and 12 children, daughters: April (Keith Carey), Morristown; Alice (late William Pelly), Antigonish; Dorothy, Antigonish; Winnie (Tim Hillier); Abigail and Mary, New Glasgow; sons: Hugh Joseph “Joe” Jr; Zachary (Wanda), David (Stephanie), New Glasgow; Isaiah and Thomas, Dartmouth; Emmanuel (Nancy), New Glasgow; sisters: Joyce, Dorothy, Anne (Thurman) Jewell, and Elizabeth Criss; brother, Robert “Bob” Izzard; 32 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
Joe was predeceased by sisters: Margaret, Winnifred and Sylvia; brother, James “Jim”; niece, Leia Jewell; nephew, Gary Criss.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral mass 11 a.m. Saturday in Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, New Glasgow, with Father Donald Boudreau officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
