HALIFAX – Mary J. MacKenzie, 89, Halifax, formerly of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully with her grandniece by her side, on October 11, 2009 in Arborstone Enhanced Care.
Mary served in the Air Force during the Second World War where she was engaged in aircraft identification. After the war, Mary studied education at Normal College and Dalhousie University. She spent the majority of her teaching career in the former Dartmouth School Board where she was a well liked and respected teacher and administrator. Mary was principal at Northwoodside Elementary School and, at the time of her retirement in 1985, was principal of Brookhouse Elementary. An avid reader and devoted educator, it is appropriate that the library at Brookhouse School is named in her honour.
Mary was a modest woman who selflessly spent her life devoted to the education and caring of others. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Angus and Jeannette MacKenzie; brothers: John, Percy, and Kenneth; sisters: Sara Backman, Florence and Emma MacKenzie; and niece, Janet (Backman) Walker.
Surviving are nephew-in-law, James Walker Sr.; grandniece, Sara Walker Gallant; grandnephew, James Walker and great-grandnephews, Jessie Walker and Cameron Gallant.
A grave side memorial will be held at Lorne Street Cemetery, New Glasgow on Sunday, October 25, 2009 at 2 p.m.
