It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, Tommy Clarkson, on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren.
Born in Sydney Mines on Dec. 16, 1934, he was the son of the late Daniel and Annie (Bernon) Clarkson. He was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines.
Tommy served with the Royal Canadian Air Force and worked with London Life Insurance Company. He was a member of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires, posted at Northside General Hospital for over 25 years. He was a Kinsmen and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #19, North Sydney. His favourite pastime for many years was swimming at Grove’s Point with all his beach buddies.
Tommy is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Shirley (Edmunds) Clarkson; children, Karen and Stacey Ramsey (Fawn, Kati Lynn (Teagan), Tamara), Carolyn and Neil Mitchell (Christopher, Klarissa, and Matthew), Daniel and Barbara Ann (Felicity), Shirley Annette and Wayne Forrest (Josh and Krissy), Trevor (Mikayla, T.J. and Andrea), and his loyal dog, Topaz.
Besides his loving parents, Daniel and Annie (Bernon) Clarkson, he was predeceased by his sister, Diane MacDonald.
Special thanks to Dr. Lloyd MacKenzie, Dr. Bill MacDonald, and the staff of 2 West, Northside General Hospital. Heartfelt appreciation is extended to the staff of DVA, Sydney office, especially Eveline Walsh; the staff of Northside Home Care, VON, and Brenda Wall for making it possible for Tommy to remain at home. He appreciated the care and enjoyed everyone’s visits.
Thanks to all our family and many friends for all their care, concern and support, especially the neighbours at Driftwood.
Visitation for Tommy Clarkson will be held Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, in the J.M.Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service celebrating his life will take place Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Marion Barclay MacKay officiating. The burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines, after the service.
Donations in Tommy’s memory may be made to the Sydney Mines Food Bank, or the Salvation Army.
