Hattie Gallant, 85, of 75 Stewart St., and formerly of Sydney River, passed away Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a sudden illness.
Born at Low Point, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mildred (Jessome) Ling.
A member of Immaculate Heart parish and the parish CWL, she was also a charter member Our Lady of Fatima parish CWL, Sydney River. In her earlier years, Hattie worked for the Office of Religious Education and was a valued assistant in the production of Mass for Shut-Ins. In 1989 she retired from Cape Breton-Victoria School Board. Hattie enjoyed the many times she spent with her good friends playing cards.
She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy (Joe) King, Florence; two sons, Joe (Cheryl) Gallant, Glencoe Mills, John (Carmel) Gallant, Sydney River; and son-in-law, Keith Vasseur, Illinois. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Sherry (Richard) Borgo, Mira, Jennifer (David Francis) Drake, Calgary, Lori (Paul) Tranquada, Ontario, Katie (David) McKee, Illinois, Valerie and A.J. Vasseur, Illinois, Jonathan and Karlie Gallant, Sydney River; a brother, Bob (Joanne) Ling, Florida; two sisters, Bertha (Derick) Ellis-Slater, Ontario, and Fran Muise, New Waterford.
She was predeceased by her husband, James ‘Doc’ Gallant in 1982, her daughter, Carol Vasseur, three brothers, Bernard, Tom and Bill Ling and four sisters, Agnes Sharpe, Olive Aucoin, Eileen MacPherson and Sister Euphrasia ‘Emily’.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Gallant will be Tuesday, Oct. 20 from 2-4 and7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Heart Church Mira Road, Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Cancer Center, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Cape Breton Palliative Care, or a charity of choice.
