It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Joseph (Joe D) MacPherson, 79, of Scotchtown, on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Joseph and Myrtle (Stagg) MacPherson.
Joe was a member of the Parish Church of St. Leonard and the New Waterford Pensioners Club.
In his younger years, Joe was a member of the Canadian Army and stationed in Val Cartier, Que. He was a coal miner for 19 years working in Nos. 18 and 20. Following this he worked on construction and then was employed as a janitor at St. Michael Church in River Ryan.
Joe spent over 31 years as a member of the music union and travelled all over the Island playing guitar at various venues. He and his wife Norma, who accompanied him on piano, were well known to the musicians and dancegoers of Cape Breton.
Joe was a pleasant man by nature and loved music and gardening in his yard.
Surviving are his wife, Norma (MacNeil); son, Bradley (Alexis) MacPherson, Scotchtown; sisters, Theresa (Greg) White, New Waterford, Carmel Timmons, St. Catharines, Ont., Chris (Ted) George and Lorraine Burke, both of New Waterford; brother, Vincent (Shirley), Sydney; grandsons, whom he adored, Robert and Mitchell; several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by a sister, Rita.
As per Joe’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, New Victoria, with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard’s Parish Hall on Convent Street, New Waterford.
Donations in his memory may be made to St. Joseph Cemetery, New Victoria or St. Michael Cemetery, River Ryan.
