It is with deep sadness we announce the death of George Rae ‘Doddy’ MacKeigan, on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Coxheath, he was a son of the late George and Irene (Campbell) MacKeigan.
George was the owner, operator of MacKeigan’s Home Heating in North Sydney, until his retirement in 1991. He was a brother of the Free Masons for 55 years. He spent his retirement repairing equipment, making hay (even this year) and enjoying visits from his many friends and family. He also loved to read, talk about old times and was an avid gardener.
George was the last surviving member of his immediate family, and the eldest member of his community, Mountain Road.
He is survived by his sons, Rae (Josephine) MacKeigan, Coxheath, David, New Brunswick; daughter, Margaret (Jerry) Buffett, North Sydney. He had 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
George was predeceased by his loving wife, Leona (Moore), children, James and Sandra, his sister, Catherine Hatcher, brothers, Alfred (in WW II) and John.
Respecting George’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a graveside committal 3 p.m. Friday, at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney, with Rev. Brenda Drake officiating. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
