CLEMENT - Clayton Edward, age 81 of Val Marie, passed away October 13, 2009 at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK. The Memorial service was held on Saturday, October 17, 2009 in the Val Marie Community Hall at 2:00 PM with Reverend Shelby Kinrade officiating. Interment was held at the Va1 Marie Cemetery. Duets were shared by Kathy Grant and James Harbor. Clayton is survived by his daughter Betty & Mike Waldner, Vicki, Dale, Colt & Samantha Belisle, Rick & Deanna, Alex, Ashlee & Jaxson Waldner. Daughter Linda & Keith Wilson; Dexter, Cherie, Bailey, Brandon & Boe Wilson, Lexie, Coady & Davin Dehr; daughter-in-law Jane, Tim & Raylee McCrea, Heidi & Curtis, Kyle, Colton, Keegan & Hanna Goffinet, Stacey, Robin and Gracie McCrea, Heather, Kelly & Alyssa. His son Homer Clement, son Blaine, Angela, Curtise & Whitney. His sister, Joyce & Don Harbor and sisters-in-law Dorothy & Iris Magee and
numerous nieces and nephews. Clayton was predeceased by his grandparents, father Homer and mother Claudia, oldest son Douglas and most of all, his loving friend and wife of 52 years, Myrtle. His brother-in-laws Gordon, Archie, Billy, Cecil and Simone Magee. Clayton was born in Val Marie, SK on April 22, 1928. He attended school in Hillandale and later in the Val Marie School. He married Myrtle Magee in the Val Marie Community Hall on July 21, 1947. He quit school at a young age and became a PFRA rider, later drove a cat for the PFRA Irrigation Division in 1945 breaking land on the West Flat for irrigating hay land. Myrtle became chief cook for the crew project, later they had a dray or delivery business in Val Marie delivering coal, flour (100 pound bags) and all rail freight. They delivered the mail to Masefield three times a week. From 1957-1959 Clayton and Myrt1e held weekly barn dances in the Old Red Barn on the farm in Hillandale with live bands and lunch served from an old trailer parked beside the barn. These were very popular and well attended, people still talk about them today. They moved from town out to what is called the Cyr's place in 1960 and eventually built the new house in 1964. In 1973 Clayton and Myrtle bought the Palais Royale Theatre and operated the weekly shows. They lived in the show hall residence for 11 years while farming and ranching at Hillandale. Clayton served as Mayor of Val Marie from 1976 - 1982. During his term the town built the village complex, Shady Lane Villas, the three duplexes and the four low-rental houses. They built the new curling rink and remodeled the skating rink with the help from the local Hutterites, federal grants and the winter work programs. Clayton and Myrtle moved back to the farm and switched from farming to mostly raising cattle with his sons Homer and Blaine under Clement Ranch. Clayton moved into the Golden West Manor in Swift Current in his later years as his emphysema was getting progressively worse and he needed to be closer to doctors. Everyone that knows Clayton knew he loved to play cards, especially if he won, if he didn't win, we soon changed games or quit playing altogether. Clayton loved people and spent his life visiting and socializing, occasionally we, his children would be a little embarrassed with some of the stuff he came out with, but he always seemed to get away with it. He will be sadly missed and forever loved by his family and his many friends. Memorial donations may be made to the Val Marie Community Hall.
