MacCONNELL (Harding), Gladys Frances – 86, passed away peacefully at Sagewood Continuing Care Community in Lower Sackville, on October 2, 2011 following a brief illness. Gladys was born in 1925 to the late Ernest and Jessie (Burton) Harding of Yarmouth. She grew up in Yarmouth and graduated from Marjorie Webster College in Washington, DC with a diploma in Secretarial Science. Gladys was employed as a secretary at East Camp in Yarmouth in the early 1940’s, and was later employed as a book keeper with Central Pharmacy. She was a long time member of IODE, and volunteered with many organizations including the Red Cross and the YMCA. Married for 58 years to her husband George, they shared many outdoor activities together with their families, including fishing near their camp in Yarmouth County, hunting and gardening. Besides her parents, Gladys was predeceased by her first husband, Elmer “Moe” Havener, father of Robert MacConnell; her second husband, George MacConnell, father of Mary Susan (MacConnell) Hagell; brother, Burton (Meryl) Harding. Surviving are Gladys’ son, Robert (Beatrice) MacConnell, and their sons, Christopher (Wanda) MacConnell and Jonathan (Antonia) MacConnell; daughter, Mary Susan (Jim) Hagell, and their children, Jennifer (Tim) Moran, Sarah (David) Cameron and Andrew Hagell; she is also survived by seven great-grandchildren. Gladdie will be sadly missed by her family members and all others who knew and loved her. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home & Crematorium Ltd. in Yarmouth. Cremation has taken place and interment of George’s and Gladys’ remains will take place at a graveside service at Darling’s Lake Cemetery for family members on Saturday, October 15 at 1 p.m. with Rev. A.D. “Bill” Newell officiating. Donations in memory of Gladys may be made to the Leif Erikson Chapter of the IODE or the YMCA in Yarmouth.
