It is with great sadness that we the family of Alonzo H. ‘Lonnie’ Garnier age 78, announce his sudden passing on Friday October 7, 2011 at his home.
Lonnie will always be remembered by his family as a wonderful father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.
Born in North Sydney he was a son of the late James R. and Sadie (Ogden) Garnier.
Lonnie was employed with Marine Atlantic until his retirement in 1998. In his early years Lonnie started working with the CNR as a red cap at the age of 12, carrying luggage from the Imperial Hotel to the CN Terminal. Lonnie loved playing crib and tarabish, and the many friends he knew from the card games. He was a big fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and loved the trip to Toronto to see a game, with his sons Kirby, Blair and niece Tanya. He was always a Montreal Canadians fan. Lonnie was returning officer for the Town of North Sydney and later appointed supervisor for North Sydney by the returning officer of CBRM. Lonnie was a devout member of St. Joseph Church, and a 3rd degree member of Father William Kiely Council, Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his daughter Edith (Ley); his four sons Lonnie Jr. (Paula), Kirby (Lori), Frank (Melanie), Blair (Amiee); grandchildren Mark, Ryan, Bhreagh (Adam), Tanya, Natasha, Kailey, Shane, Victoria, Colton, Andy, Joshua; great grandson Peyton and two other great grandchildren on the way. Also surviving his brothers Don Garnier, Glace Bay, John Garnier, Oromocto, Clyde (Evelyn) Garnier, Ottawa; brothers-in-law Bill Kirby (Colleen), Clive Kirby (Violet) and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife of 47 years Jean (Kirby) Garnier; sisters Polly Young, Patricia Hamilton, Shirley Roussel; brothers Jim, Sid, Reg, Wally and Terry Garnier.
The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Igoe for the wonderful care he has given our dad and to his nephew Mike Young for always being there when dad needed him and to his friends Gerard Keigan and Danny Poirier for there many visits with our dad.
A visitation for Lonnie will be held 7-9 p.m. Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
