Fred passed peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, surrounded by his family. The son of Frederick (Freddie) McCabe and Annie Caines, Fred was born in Glace Bay in 1939.
Fred worked as an electrician for Lynk Electric Ltd., Sydney, for 25 years and belonged to the IBEW local 1852. He was a member of the Glace Bay Kinsmen Association for many years. He spent much of his life involved in the Boy Scouts of Canada having been a Queen Scout and a leader at Knox United Church in Glace Bay for several years. He loved camping and was fortunate enough to have participated in World Boy Scout Jamborees as both a camper and a leader.
Fred is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Joan (Nee MacDonald); his mother, Annie (nee Caines); sons, Craig (Gina Brufatto), Brampton, Ont., Jamie (Monica O’Regan), Mississauga, Ont.; and daughter, Diane, Toronto, Ont.; and four grandchildren whom he adored, Alicia, Robert, Cameron and Derek; sisters, Lola Nelson, Port Alberni, B.C., Eileen (Kevin Coffin), Glace Bay; sister-in-law, Lois (Brian Wylde), Wasaga Beach, Ont.; nephews, Wade, Karl, Robert Coffin, Richard Nelson, Scott, Chris, Brad Wylde; nieces, Laurel Nelson, Nadine Levasseur and Eileen Ursel; very close friend, Richard Murphy, Reserve Mines.
He was predeceased by his father, Frederick, father and mother-in-law John (J.J) and Violet (Puggie) MacDonald.
Visitation will be held at Patten Funeral Home, Glace Bay, Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011, from 7-9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation, ICU department at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or a charity of choice.
