Mary ‘Mamie’ Reid, age 69, of Park Street, New Waterford, daughter of the late James and Effie (Spurell) Tilley, wife of Russell ‘Sovie’ Reid, passed away Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Mamie was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland. In her younger years, she worked in Toronto at the Dominion Store. For many years she was a member of the former St. Agnes parish. Mamie loved cooking, baking, bingo and going for long rides in the country with her loving husband. She had a glowing personality and great sense of humour. Mamie was also an excellent storyteller, singer and a lover of music. She could always be heard at gatherings, singing her favourite tunes.
Mamie was more than just a mother, grandmother, aunt, great-grandmother, wife, she was an angel in all of our eyes and will always remain in our hearts and memories forever.
Besides her loving husband, Russell Patrick ‘Sovie’ Reid, Mamie is survived by three daughters, Debbie Reid, Alice O’Brien, Donna Carrigan; two sons, Russell, Cecil; daughter-in-law, Dawn Jollie; sons-in-law, Wayne Carrigan, James O’Brien and Donnie Brown. Mamie is also survived by three sisters, Joan, Josie, Doris; seven grandchildren, Kenny, Daniel, Travis Carrigan, Jordan, Johnny, Judith Reid, Kyle O’Brien and five great-grandchildren, Hannah MacLeod, Alexandria Piercey, Chloe, Natalie and Darien Carrigan. Left to mourn her passing are several, nieces, nephews; and very close friends, Anita Digero and Doreen Bursey.
Mamie was predeceased by four children in infancy, Russell, Joseph, Thomas, Rita, four brothers, Alex, Tom, Alphonse, Joseph, three sisters, Marg, Teresa, Kay and her stepfather, Fred Brow.
The visitation is Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford with the funeral mass being celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Leonard’s Church, Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Mamie, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke Foundation.
