Betty Woodland, age 70, of Mahon Street, New Waterford, passed away Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Henry ‘Sonny’ and Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ (Perfect) Gouthro.
Betty was a member of the former St. Michael’s Church, River Ryan. She was a homemaker who loved her family dearly. Betty was a very compassionate lady who put others before herself. She had a caring and deep affection for her grandchildren. She also loved cooking, playing bingo and chatting with family and friends.
Betty is survived by her longtime friend and husband, Wilbur ‘Web’ Woodland; two daughters, Valerie (Willie) MacLeod, Scotchtown, Ashley Woodland, New Waterford; two sons, Malcolm and Wilbur ‘Web’ Jr., both in New Waterford. She is also survived by her sister, Marcella (Harold) Penny, Scotchtown; six grandchildren, Chantel, Brittney, Ashley, Joshua, Kyle, Wilbur; nieces, nephews and a special nephew, Harold Penny Jr.
Betty was predeceased by three brothers, Malcolm, Bernie and Sonny Jr.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2-4,7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Ray Huntley is Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in St. Leonard Church followed by interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Betty, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke Foundation.
