NEW GLASGOW/STELLARTON – John James O’Brien, 76 of Munro Ave., New Glasgow, formerly of Stellarton, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on October 22, 2009 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Jack and Jessie (Heighton) O’Brien.
John started his working years in the coalmines and later went to work as an industrial mechanic, worked at Heath Steel Mines in New Brunswick and then went to Michelin Tire from where he retired. He enjoyed playing cards and darts, and loved to spend time with his family camping in Six Mile Brook. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church and was also a member of Branch No: 28 Royal Canadian Legion Stellarton.
He is survived by his loving wife, Coleen “Paddy”; children, John (June), Foxbrook; Theron, Plymouth; Coleen (Irwin), Gairloch Road; Morley (Marcie), Springville; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sisters: Dorothy, Fran and Anna Mae, all of Dartmouth, and Mary, Maine.
He was predeceased by sons, Shawn and Kenneth; sisters, Hank and Ducca.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 24 in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church with Father Peter MacDonald officiating. Cremation will follow. Family burial will be held in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery at a later date.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society.
