It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of a wonderful man, Reginald William Colbourne, 86, of Cherry Street, Sydney. He passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Grand Falls, Nfld. in 1925, he was the son of the late William Reginald and Florence (Graham) Colbourne.
He moved to Sydney in 1942 at the age of 17 and took a job at the former Sydney Steel Plant, where he worked for 38 years. ‘Reg’ was a devoted father and grandfather and loved being surrounded by his family.
Reg is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary (nee Brewer) and eight sons, Reggie, David (Marlene), Lawrence (Lorraine), Stephen (Doreen), Robert (Danette), Bradley (Karen), Rodney (Donna), Billy (Dale) and three daughters, Marie Colbourne Neaves, Brenda Walsh, Nancy (Robert Antle); as well as, 25 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Reg is also survived by a sister, Marg Pierre and a special brother-in-law, John Brewer and his family.
Besides his parents, Reg was predeceased by his brothers, Raymond, James, Samuel, sisters, Nelly and Bride and special sister-in-law, Cecilia Brewer.
A special thank you to Dr. Paul Murphy for your continuing care over the past years. We wish to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Mary Hutchinson and the staff of MacEachern Place at the Northside Community Guest Home. You showed such compassion and kindness to our dad over the last year and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you to Dr. Bernie McIntosh and the staff of the 4th floor of the Northside General Hospital for making dad’s last days as comfortable as possible.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Theresa Church on Saturday, 10 a.m. with Rev. James Oliver officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home (MacEachern Place), Cape Breton Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of your choice.
