It is with heartfelt sadness, we the family announce the passing of Marie Caroline Steele, age 87, beloved mother, grandmother and sister. Marie passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with her loving family by her side.
Born in North Sydney, Marie was the daughter of the late James and Caroline (Newman) Johnston. She was a devoted and loving wife to the late John Steele for 63 years. Marie will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother and sister who lived a quiet, peaceful life taking care of her family and will be dearly missed. She was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney.
She is survived by her daughter Caroline (Ken) MacLeod, North Sydney; her son Percy (Mary) Steele, North Sydney; granddaughters Marie MacLeod-Gerrow (Don), Sydney Mines, Caroline MacLeod, North Sydney, Marianne Steele (Dan) MacSween, Georges River and Bonnie Steele (Glen) MacKenzie, Leitches Creek; and two great-grandchildren Jill MacSween and Jenna Grace MacKenzie. Marie is also survived by her sister Frances Hillier; brothers Walter (June) Johnston, William (Yvonne) Johnston, Nelson (Celesta) Johnston, all of North Sydney as well as many nieces and nephews.
Along with her husband John A. Steele, Marie was also predeceased by her two sons, Hughie and Hector Steele; her two sisters, Genevieve Johnston and Queenie Crosby; brothers Percy and Ronald ‘Rannie’ Johnston; brothers-in-law Ron Crosby and George Hillier.
The family would like to thank her caregivers Lois MacDonald, Karen Eavis and Bonnie Eavis, who took such great care of Marie and made a real difference in her life.
Private family visitation will be held in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service for Marie will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating. Burial in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
