It is with deep sorrow, that we announce the passing of our dear son, brother, father and uncle. Rodney passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011, as the result of an automobile accident in Alberta. He was a resident of Fort McMurray.
Born on April 3, 1970, in Glace Bay, Rodney is the son of Steve and Marlyn (Chant) Gillard.
Rodney spent the past number of years working in Alberta as a pipefitter and plumber. He was a member of Local 488 in Edmonton and a former member of Local 682 in Sydney.
Rodney was a very gentle, kind and considerate son who loved his family very much. He will be held forever in our hearts.
Rodney is survived by his daughter, Jessie Olivia, whom he loved dearly, and her mother, Jovita Hynes. Also surviving are his brothers, Todd (Carole), Halifax, Bradley (Natalie), Edmonton, Jeffery (Jennifer), with whom he resided; nieces and nephews, Jack Stephen, Jerzee Kate, Jessie and McKayla, who were his special family. Rodney is also survived by his many aunts, uncles and cousins in both Canada and U.S.A.
Cremation has taken place in Edmonton. Rodney’s cremated ashes will be taken back home to Glace Bay by his brothers, Bradley and Jeffery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service, officiated by Martha MacDonald, is Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. A reception will follow at the North Street Club, Glace Bay.
As an expression of sympathy for Rodney, memorial donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
