It is with a very heavy heart that we wish to announce the sudden, peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Omar Dauphinee at the Glace Bay Hospital on Oct. 15, 2011.
Omar was a former coal miner of many years and a proud Second World War veteran who served in Italy and Holland. He was a life-time member of Branch 78 Royal Canadian Legion in Dominion having served as president, secretary and the position he was most proud of — Service Officer for many years. He truly enjoyed this position helping many veterans receive compensations and benefits from Veterans Affairs.
Omar was a very active man who enjoyed weight-lifting, skating, roller-blading and biking up to the age of 80. What brought the biggest smile to Omar's face was when his children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren visited and they would get the biggest hug and kiss from him. His family was so very important to him and he loved each one as if they were the only one. He was a very kind-hearted man who loved his church, his Blessed Mother and he was the spiritual child of St. Padre Pio. He quietly helped many people in need such as the Food Bank.
Omar was the son of the late Simon Blowers and Mary (Corbett) Dauphinee.
He is survived by his wife, Matilda (Tillie Dunn) Dauphinee. They were blessed to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on Aug. 26, 2011.
Also surviving are his 15 children, Corrine (Mike) Mischiek, Gerard (Jan) Dauphinee, Lynn Dauphinee-Dodd, Nancy (Owen) Brown, Omar (Lois), Paul (Anna Marie), Rosemary (Derrick) MacNamara, Diane Dauphinee (Frank Kilgar), Sharon (Doug) MacKenzie, Donna (Garry) Kenny, Marquette (Danise McNeil), Patricia (Ernie) Bishop, Carol, Allen and Kelly. He is also survived by his 32 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and two more expected great-grandchildren; his sisters, Olive MacNeil, Anita (Emery) Mahe and Lorraine McMullin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Kathleen (in infancy), Kay Cathcart and his only brother, John.
Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 17, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. The funeral will take place Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. Daniel Boudreau officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favourite charity.
Light lunch will follow in the parish hall.
