With sadness, but in joy at her release from illness, we announce the passing of Ena Kuschnig, peacefully at her home, with her husband Hans, and caregiver Ellen at her side, on Oct. 14, 2011. Ena’s strong faith in God and strength of character sustained her throughout her lifetime.
Born, Sept. 26, 1919, in Forden, Holland, she was the oldest child of Gerrit and Gertruda (Schresien) Brinks.
She trained as a maternity welfare worker in Holland where she worked prior to immigrating to Canada in 1955. She met her husband Hans while they were both working in North River, C.B. They were married in 1957, came to Ross Ferry in 1962.
Ena was employed at Harbour View Hospital, Sydney Mines, as a CNA until her retirement; she was a gifted person with many interests. Ena and Hans loved to dance, to visit their many friends; she also enjoyed assisting Hans as he piloted their airplane over Boularderie and beyond. She was a skilled craftsperson; her knitted and crocheted items are prized gifts to her friends. She loved gardening, and had many African violets gracing her home. Her gifts of Christmas breads were enjoyed by many.
Ena was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Ross Ferry. Life member of Knox AMS, member of Knox Choir, Planning Committee of Knox, member of Munro Crafters, Ross Ferry Crafters. She was active in her community and a long-time supporter of the Boularderie Food Bank. Ena spoke many times of her happiness in Ross Ferry and of the many acts of kindness to herself and Hans. Her message; “always give kindness, not strife.” Ena was loved and will be missed by community members, church family and many friends.
