MRS. HELEN THOMPSON
It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother, Helen Alida Thompson. Mom died peacefully in the Saskatoon City Hospital on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at the age of 91. She was born on the 27th of February, 1918 in Dodson, Montana, the eldest child of Alfred and Hazel Aspvik. In 1926 the family immigrated to Canada where they settled in Paddockwood, SK. Here Mom attended school, met and in 1939 married Robert Thompson. Their daughters, Gloria and Helen were born in the first Red Cross outpost hospital. Mom and Dad lived on the farm until 1944 when they moved to Prince Albert where their daughter Elaine was born. Family was very important to Mom and Dad. It formed the focal point of their lives, raising their family in the house that Dad built. Mom was a “wonderful seamstress and she could sew anything the girls wanted from a catalogue picture” quoted her family. Her many hours of sewing included costumes for Hallowe’en and for Christmas concerts. Holidays were special to Mom, especially Christmas. They were always celebrated with family. Mom enjoyed many interests besides sewing. Among them were knitting, oil painting and dancing. When she was young, she also enjoyed horseback riding, and later bowling and volunteer work. She was secretary-treasurer, Sunday school teacher and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of her church for many years. In later years, Mom attended the Messiah Lutheran Church and was a part of the ladies group. She also worked as a volunteer for the Prince Albert Co-operative Community Clinic. After Dad passed away in 1972, Mom continued to live in her home until 1985 when she moved to Marquis Towers. Her next moved was in 2005 to Luther Towers in Saskatoon so that she could be near family. In 2008 Mom moved to an intermediate care home in Saskatoon, the Palisades. Mom is survived by her loving family: her daughters Gloria (Jerry) Beattie of Kinistino, Elaine (Ken) Jarvis of Saskatoon and Helen (Merle) Sebry of High River, AB; her grandchildren Robert Miller of Prince Albert, Wanda Spraque of Lethbridge, AB and her children Tanner and Justin Dale Miller and Bobbie Spraque, Peter Miller of Vancouver, BC, Lana (Allan) Hendin of Saskatoon and her children Travis and Cody Sanderson, Sean (Tanya) Beattie of Saskatoon and their children Morgan, Asher and Cameron, Ryan (Kristy) Jarvis of Saskatoon and their daughter Claire, Shay (Shasta) Jarvis of Sherwood Park, AB and their son Marix; two great-great-grandchildren; her sisters Myrtle (Ken) Beckman of Prince Albert, Alietha (Earl) Beckman of Lawrence, Kansas, Gladys Kuzyk of Lanigan; her brothers Victor (Mary) Aspvik of Spruce Home, Helmer (Lois) Aspvik of Paddockwood; a special friend Ward Marshall of Melfort and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 33 years Robert; her mother and father Hazel and Alfred Aspvik; a brother Richard Aspvik; an infant sister Alice Aspvik; a special friend and companion Peder Skotheim; her mother-in-law and father-in-law Helena and Robert Thompson; her sisters-in-law Cecily Frost and Marie Thompson; her brothers-in-law Jack Thompson, George Thompson, Alfred Thompson and John Kuzyk. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27 from River Park Memorial Chapel. Mr. Ray Beckman will officiate. Interment will take place in the Garden of Devotion, Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. It is the family’s request that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
