It is with sadness that we the family, announce the passing of William ‘Willie’ Poirier, on Friday, October 23, 2009 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Cheticamp on November 16, 1923, Willie was the son of the late Joe and Margaret (Gaudet) Poirier. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a member of the Parish Church of Saint Leonard. Willie worked for over 35 years as a coal miner until his retirement. Prior to this, he was a devoted fisherman in Cheticamp.
Willie liked the outdoors, especially trout fishing and picking berries and thoroughly enjoyed his summers in Cheticamp.
Surviving are his loving partner, Theresa; daughters, Kathleen (Erven) Cestnick, Digby, NS; Rosey (Martin) McCarthy and Wilma MacNeil, both of Sydney; one son, Dale (Helen) Poirier, New Waterford. Also surviving are Willie’s brothers, Charlie (Beatrice) Sydney, Albert and Lubie, both in Ontario; sisters, Katie Roach, New Waterford and Marie Janette Maglario, Sydney; his five grandchildren, Eric, John, Marty, Tony and Joelle; as well as eight great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Willie was predeceased by his loving wife Dora (Chiasson); a brother, Georgie and by sisters, Zabeth, Roseann, Mary Louise, Julie and Annie.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass to celebrate Willie’s life will be held on Monday, October 26, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Parish Church of Saint Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford, with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the Carmel Centre.
