Age 88, a La Scie native for nearly 85 years, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, October 13, 2009 at the Health Sciences Centre, St. John's, N.L. after a short illness.
Claude Martin was born on June 3, 1921 in LaScie, N.L. to Patrick Martin and Catherine (Dwyer) Martin.
He married Ethel May (Short) Martin in Grand Falls, N.L. on April 18, 1971 shortly before his 50th birthday. They had been married nearly 39 wonderful years.
Claude was everywhere in the community, a dear friend to many people, a mentor to dozens of young people and an active volunteer. He loved a good drink while playing cards, reading a good WWII book and spending time with his family. He is predeceased by Patrick & Catherine Martin (father & mother); Blair (brother-in-law) & Josephine Campbell (sister); and Raymond Short (father-in-law).
Left with fond and loving memories are his wife Ethel and their two children, Patrick and his wife, Marlene of St. John’s, N.L. and Michael and his wife Kathryn of Morden, MB; grandchildren Connor, Matthew and Nicholas; also nieces Debbie Connor, Margaret Topping and Sharon Campbell-Macsween; Effie Short (mother-in-law); with nine brother-in-laws and two sister-in-laws and a large circle of other relatives and friends.
Father Joseph Tebsis conducted the funeral mass at St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church and Cemetery, La Scie, on Saturday, October 17, 2009.
Pallbearers were Michael Martin, Patrick Martin, Bruce Short, Randy Short, John Short and Clifford Short, and the crossbearer was Mark Topping.
A memorial has been established in Claude’s name with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.
