It is with great sadness and heavy hearts, that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Margaret ‘Polly’ MacNeil, age 84, a longtime resident of 5th Street in No. 2. She passed away Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay, surrounded by her loving family and the wonderful staff at the manor.
Born June 17, 1927, in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Allister and Florence (Tracey) MacLeod.
Polly’s greatest love in her life was her family. She loved spending every minute she could with her sons, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Polly enjoyed dancing and listening to music; she was even known to belt out a song or two. Polly was well known for her amazing passion she had for baking. People would come from all around to have her homemade bread, cookies and her famous fudge. Many memories of Polly include the delicious smells out of her kitchen. She was a kind, loving soul who enjoyed life and a good laugh. Polly was very faithful to her religion. She will be sadly missed by all her family and friends and anyone who had the honor of knowing or meeting her.
Polly leaves behind her nine children, Shirley Shortliffe, Truro, Allister (Marion) MacNeil, Glace Bay, Catherine (Don) Cutler, Ontario, Wayne (Karen) MacNeil, Truro, Anthony (Linda) MacNeil, Glace Bay, William (Sharon) MacNeil, Glace Bay, Esther (Sheldon) Hiscock, Glace Bay, Linda (Kirk) O’Brien, Glace Bay, James (Michelle) MacNeil, Glace Bay; her sisters, Esther (Tony) Wadden, Truro, Ethel MacDonald, Truro; brother, Dave ‘Willie’ MacLeod, Ontario; along with 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Polly was predeceased by her husband, Walter Pius MacNeil, sister, Shirley MacLeod, brother, John ‘Hooker’ MacLeod, nephew, Howard MacLeod and granddaughter, Tayna Shortliffe.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 2-4, 7- 9 p.m. in the V.J.McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Leo Boone is Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in St. John’s Church, followed by interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
As an expression of sympathy for Polly, memorial donations in her memory may be made to Seaview Manor, Glace Bay.
