EUREKA – Evelyn “Jean” Rankin, age 93, of Valley View Villa, Riverton, and formerly of Eureka and Riverton Heights, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 23rd, 2009, in the Villa with her daughter Faye by her side.
Born in Eureka, she was a daughter of the late Robert Allan and Mabel (Winters) Rankin.
Jean was a resident of Eureka before moving to Riverton Heights in 1978 and had been a resident of Valley View Villa for the past five years.
She was a member of the former Wesley United Church and an adherant of St. Columba United Church and the UCW. Jean was also a charter member and past-president of the ladies Auxiliary of Branch #75 Royal Canadian Legion, Eureka.
Jean worked for many years as a cook at the Pictou County Home, Riverton, and later as a PCW. She was member of the Valley View Villa Auxiliary. Jean loved to travel on bus trips with her friends and also enjoyed music and playing cards.
She was a proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Jean was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are a daughter, Faye, Mrs. Barry Smith, Eureka; a son, Dale (Pat) Rankin, Hamilton, Ont.; grandchildren: Harvey (Kelly) Smith, Westville, Chris (Tara) Smith, Calgary; Ivan (Mary) Rankin, Hamilton, Ont.; great-grandchildren, Cody and Cassie Smith; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Rankin, Florence, Cape Breton.
Jean was predeceased by sister, Beatrice Boates, and a sister, Pearl, in infancy; brothers: Stanley, William, Alvin and Earl; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Rankin.
The family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton, from where funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Heather Landry officiating. Burial will be in the Riverton Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory of Jean may be made to the Valley View Villa Auxiliary or to the Valley View Villa Bus Fund.
