Richard Clayton Ryan, 95 of Dominion Street, Whitney Pier, passed away peacefully at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011.
Born in Avondale, Nfld., he was the son of the late James and Agnes (Doyle) Ryan, Avondale. He was a longtime resident of Whitney Pier and a member of Holy Redeemer parish.
Richard was employed at the Sydney Steel Plant, Blast Furnace Dept. until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of the Sydney Pensioners Club and enjoyed bowling and was an avid Tarabish player. Richard will be sadly missed by many friends and family. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Richard is survived by his loving family, John and Jean Ryan, Sydney; son, Clayton, Ontario. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Cheryl Sousa, Clayton Ryan, both of Ontario; Michael Ryan, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; Jennifer Maher, Calgary, Alta.; great-grandchildren, Michael Sousa, Taylor Ryan, Jack and Penny Maher and also by brother-in-law, Aiden Browne, ON.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Winifred (Browne), who passed away in 2010; a daughter in infancy; brothers, Frank, Raymond, Harold; sisters, Angela Quinn, Alice Earle, Kathleen Hannon and Pearl Barron.
Visitation for Mr. Ryan will take place Monday, Oct. 24 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Paul Murphy officiating. A brief visitation will also be held in Placentia, Nfld. at Maher Funeral Home on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, followed immediately by a burial service at Fr. McGettigan Cemetery, Placentia.
