MARTIN, EFFIE M. - Effie Mabel Martin of Saint John, wife of the late Thomas Gordon Martin, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, following a period of failing health. Born at Sussex, New Brunswick on June 17, 1927, she was a daughter of the late George and Georgina (McFarlane) Lair. Effie worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the Dietary Department, and then at Brook Bond (Red Rose Tea) for several years, but retired in her mid 50s. She enjoyed watching television and listening to Daniel O’Donnell, and also enjoyed crocheting. Effie had a wonderful sense of humour and loved to laugh, and had a heart of gold, often helping those less fortunate and was a proud supporter of the IWK Hospital. Most of all, she enjoyed her grandchildren, who were the apple of her eye. Effie is survived by her children, Margaret Myers (Henry) of Saint John, Nancy Martin of Saint John, Bonnie Martin (Bob Grant) of Musquash, and Paul Lair of Saint John; step-sons Billy Martin (Carolyn) of Saint John and Georgie Martin of Saint John; a sister, Ruth Thompson of Saint John; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Effie was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.
Although there will be no visitation, relatives and friends are invited to attend the graveside funeral service, which will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 2:30 pm at Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the IWK Children’s Hospital or to any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
