MAE MCMULLEN

Passed on: October 21st, 2011

At the age of 88, our mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, and friend, Mae McMullen, passed away on October 21, 2011, after living a full and active life. Born Agnes Mae Coombes on March 29th, 1923, she was predeceased by her husband Stan, brother Edgar, and sister-in-law Phyllis. She is survived by daughter, Linda McMullen of Saskatoon; son and daughter-in-law Ron and Gerry (her kindred spirit) McMullen of Kelowna; sister Elaine (Wayne) Davidson of Estevan; several nieces and nephews on the Coombes side of the family; niece and special friend, Anne (Tom) Sanderson of La Ronge on the McMullen side of the family; as well as her most cherished grandchildren, Bill, Chad, and Heather, children of Ron and Gerry; and Dan, Nathan, and Alix, children of Linda. Over the past few years, she happily welcomed great grandchildren Payton and Jayden (of Bill), and Cody, Austin, and most recently, Reese (of Chad and Debbie). Mae was raised in a rural setting near Tugaske, SK. After graduating high school, she attended Normal school in Moose Jaw and then taught for a few months in rural Saskatchewan. When she concluded that riding in a horse-drawn buggy and lighting a wood stove in the dead of winter were not for her, she joined the Signal Corp of the Canadian Navy and served in maritime Canada during World War II. After returning to post-war Moose Jaw, she met Stan on a blind date and they married on October 15, 1946. Mae was a stay-at-home mother until both Ron and Linda were in school; she then began working as a bookkeeper and eventually as office manager at several businesses in Moose Jaw. Mae and Stan were always active with their participation in sports, such as curling, hockey, and bowling, travel with family and friends, dances, and get-togethers. Mae was also a very active member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Moose Jaw Firefighters, the Legion, and the Maple Leaf Club. But nothing matched Stan’s and Mae’s devotion to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. From the early 1960’s, they supported the team through good and not-so-good years and traveled from Moose Jaw to Regina for every home game. After Stan died in 1983, Mae moved to Saskatoon to be closer to Linda and family, but she continued her active life. She switched her hockey allegiance to the Saskatoon Blades, but was a die-hard Rider fan to the end, still making the trip to Regina for the home games until a year before her death. She also expanded her travel adventures to include Europe, the Middle East and South America. Of her many qualities, she will fondly be remembered as a solid and loyal supporter of every member of her family and of all her many friends. She was always there when any of us needed her and was unfailingly non-judgmental. The Riders need to know that Mae passed on her dedicated support of the team to her children and grandchildren. We are better for having had Mae with us. She is an example for us to live by, and her spirit will always be in our hearts. The family thank the staff of Stensrud Lodge for their respectful and compassionate care. We feel so fortunate to have had you in our lives for the past three months. A Celebration of Mae’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 26th at the Nutana Legion Lounge (3021 Louise Street, Saskatoon, SK). Interment will be held in the Rosedale Cemetery, in Moose Jaw on Thursday, October 27th at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements in care of David Schurr – MOURNING GLORY FUNERAL SERVICES (978-5200). www.mourningglory.ca.
