Passed in: Baddeck, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: October 26th, 2011
Charles passed away Oct. 26, 2011 at the Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck, N.S.
He was the son of the late John Eddie and Mary Alice Campbell.
Carl lived his entire life in the village of Baddeck, he was a very gifted athlete and excelled on the local sport scene. A Golden Glover in boxing, an avid mid-distance runner and a champion pitcher as a youth in Maritime senior softball.
For most of his adult life, the sport of harness racing was his passion. Carl and friend Monty MacRae formed RaeBell Farms in the 70s. They enjoyed great success on the Maritime harness racing and breeding scene. The many horses he trained over the years were “the best he’d ever trained.” Richie, Freddie, Hugh, Phonse, Carlyle and Monty all shared in many great harness memories over the years. Carl’s dearest friend Robert made a lot of memories possible. A special thank you from the family for that indelible friendship.
Carl owned and operated Campbell’s Cash Market for most of his working life. The market was a Main Street landmark in the tiny village of Baddeck. His love for the village and its people was reflected in his everyday demeanor. The day was not complete until everyone had what they needed. Buddy, Mary, Gussie, Irwin, and Danny were part of the daily routine. Jessie, Kenny, Eddie, Althia, and many other employees made grocery shopping at “Campbell’s” a pleasant experience. The respect he earned as a merchant makes his family humble to this day.
Carl was known as ‘Mappo’ by his friends and peers. His closest friends just called him ‘Map’. He was known as ‘Dad’ by his six children who all reside in Baddeck. His light shone the brightest when the word ‘Grampie’ was spoken. This was reserved for the fourteen most cherished people in his life. They will miss him the most.
He is survived by three sons, Jamie (Carol), Sandy (Annie) and Carl (Jennifer); three daughters, Gayle (Jim) Ann Marie and Patti Sue (Peter); his three sisters Marilyn Cameron, Christine Ross and Sadie Cann;10 grandchildren, Sara (Kent), Candra (Chris), Jaime (Matt), Tara (Mark), Patrick, Breagh, Peter (Jeanne), Hailee (Will) Amber and Madison and four great-grandchildren, Megan, Maci, Campbell and Lawson.
He was predeceased by his wife Mora (MacLeod); brother Roy and son-in-law Don.
There will be visitation at MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck, Oct. 29, 2011 from 2 to 9 p.m. A grave side service will be held Sunday, Oct. 30th at 2 p.m. at Harbourview Cemetery, South Haven with Rev. Cameron Brett officiating.
In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to Alderwood Rest Home or to a charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank the entire village for supporting our father during his many years in business. A special thank you to the great people who make Alderwood and Baddeck Hospital very special facilities. You all made him feel special. His doctor and good friend, Carlyle Chow is one of a kind.
Our last and greatest thank you goes to our mother and his wife, Mora. She was his purpose and his support. He lost her in 2009. He is no doubt enduring a lengthy Q & A session on how we are all doing. We are all doing fine Mom, now that you are taking care of Dad.
Funeral under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck.
