HUSKILSON, Harold MacKay, 91, Lockeport, Shelburne and Yarmouth, passed away peacefully in Bayside Home, Barrington on Monday, October 24, 2011. Born in Lockeport on March 25, 1920, he was a son of the late Lewis and Sarah (Lloyd) Huskilson. After graduation from Lockeport High School he attended Mt. Allison University in Sackville, N.B. His education was interrupted due to the war effort until 1945. After the war he studied at the Renaud School of Embalming in New York City under Dr. Renaud and graduated in 1946. After graduation he returned to Lockeport to work with his father at the Family Funeral Home and Construction business. He built his first funeral home in Shelburne in 1947 and later acquired the former Laurie King Funeral Home in 1958. After losing his first son, “Teddy”, he and his wife Elsie moved to Yarmouth and soon opened another Funeral Home in 1952. He also established a Funeral Home in Wedgeport in 1969, and acquired Kenney’s Funeral Home in Barrington in 1979. Harold is well known for his community involvement in both Shelburne and Yarmouth counties. Harold was a life time member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party, a life time member of Trinity United Church in Shelburne and Beacon United Church in Yarmouth, he was the first chairman of the new Shelburne Regional High School, Charter member of the Shelburne Kinsmen Club, Charter Member of the Lockeport Legion and Charter Member of the Lockeport Crescent Chapter and Past Patron of both Crescent and Keystone Chapters of the Eastern Star. As a Mason he joined Taylor Lodge in 1941 and was District Deputy Grand Master for 1949-1950. He was also a member of Albert Lodge in Shelburne, and was a 52 year member of the Scottish Rite of the 32nd degree. He was a Shriner and a Member of the Royal Order of Scotland. He was a Past President of the Nova Scotia Funeral Directors Association from 1965-1967. Harold made his way into a life of politics where he served on both the Shelburne Town Council and the Yarmouth Town Council and resigned when he was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, and successfully held the seat for 23 years in Shelburne. Harold served as Minister of Social Services, Minister of Information & Communications and Provincial Secretary. Harold was known for being a great ball player. He started playing for the Lockeport Sea Caps in 1939 and they went on to win the County Championships. In the early days of the war he played for the Army team in Yarmouth and they won the Gateway Championships. While stationed in Debert with the 4th Armed Division, he received permission to play for the Truro Bear Cats who won the Nova Scotia championships that year. After the war he returned to Lockeport where he coached and played for the Sea Caps, the team was undefeated in league play in 1946, and won three County League Championships. Later when he moved to Shelburne he managed and played for the Shelburne Loyalists. When he moved to Yarmouth he played and co-managed the Yarmouth Gateways who won three Championships in a row. His highlight came while playing for Yarmouth when he hit four home runs off an American pitcher in the playoffs with Yarmouth winning the game 4-1, and the Championship. Harold enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved gardening and although baseball and politics were a large part of his life, his favourite pastime was community involvement. He is the last surviving member of his family of nine. He will be sadly missed by his loving family. He is survived by son, Clifford (Linda); daughter, Elizabeth (Grant) Fillmore; A special “Papa” to grandson, Andrew (Jennie); granddaughter, Andrea Huskilson-Newell; great grandchildren, Brandon, Jade, and Carmen. Harold was predeceased by his wife, the former Elsie Edwards; son, “Teddy”; brothers, Malcolm, Lloyd, Ralph, St. Clair, and Wilfred; sisters, Thelma, Bonnie, Annie, as well as a sister and brother in infancy. Visitation was held on Wednesday, October 26, in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth, 29 Albert Street, with an Eastern Star Service at 7:30. Visitation also took place on Thursday, October 27 in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 58 Bulkley St. Shelburne with a Legion Service at 7:00 and a Masonic Service at 7:15 p.m. A Funeral Service was held Friday, October 28 in the Shelburne Community Centre, 63 King Street with Rev. Joanne McFadden officiating. Interment in Pine Grove Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the IWK Children’s Hospital.
