Celebrating 84 years of a life well and fully-lived, the family of James (Jim) Reginald Young held him in their arms and hearts when he died at the Northside General Hospital on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009.
Born in Little Bras d’Or , Jim was a son of the late Lowry and Kathleen (Chisholm) Young.
As a young man, he was employed at Rahey’s Supermarket and the Franklin Mine. A master marine electronics technician, Jim serviced vessels all over the island and was often flown to ships in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. He operated Young’s Marine Electronics and Young’s Topex for many years. He was a charter member of the Northside Kiwanis Club, a 4th degree Knight of Columbus, a former member of the Northern Yacht Club and an active advocate of organ donation. He was a devout Roman Catholic, Jim was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
Jim reveled in the simple pleasures of life: a majestic Georges River sunset, his ride-on lawn mower, a drive in the country, his evening ‘tot’, dozing on the sofa or his lawn chair. His favourite place on earth was his cottage in Georges River where he spent many happy days enjoying the laughter, antics and summer time pursuits of his children and then his grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Seeing how they loved his special place really warmed his heart. Family birthday celebrations were never complete without his chant, “Cut the cake! Cut the cake!â€
Jim-Jim will be greatly missed by his wife of 61 years, Julia Theresa (Rahey). He was so very proud of his children and 10 grandchildren, son Brian (Nancy) and their children Jodi (Doug) Reid, Halifax, Brianne, Edmonton, Andrew and Nicholas, North Sydney; son Eric and his daughters Ericka, Vancouver and Victoria, North Sydney; daughter Regina (Mike) Meaney and their children Molly, Bryden and Maggie, Georges River. Jim’s pride and joy was his great-granddaughter Philippa Reid, Halifax. Jim dearly loved his brothers Alec (Agnes), Sydney Mines, Roy (Eileen), Georges River, John (Rosaire), North Sydney; and his cherished sister, Regina (Jean) Settle, Halifax. Many nieces and nephews will miss Uncle Jim.
Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by brothers, George, Lawrence and Dave, infant son, Joseph, granddaughter, Carmen and great-grandson, Davy Reid.
A visitation for Jim will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Jim Attwood officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
