Passed on: November 5th, 2011
It is with heavy hearts the family announces the passing of Tanya Lynn Grant after a long battle with cancer on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at the Glace Bay General Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Lena (Seymour) Grant-Young and the late William Grant.
Tanya was a graduate of CBU Business Program, worked for CP Hotels in Alberta, British Columbia and New Brunswick, and was one of the first female paramedics in the Province of Nova Scotia. She was employed by EMS, her paramedic career ended due to her illness. Tanya had a natural flare for interior decorating and loved many things including cooking, the beach, Mira, ice skating, cats, and most of all spending time with her daughter.
Tanya is survived by her loving mother, Lena Grant-Young; dedicated stepfather, Michael Young and daughter, Angela Shepard (Ehab Hagen), California. She is also survived by sisters, Bilynda (Hoyles) Grant-Whiting, Kingston, N.S., Sheri Grant (Gerald Crane), Glace Bay; one special nephew, Grant Whiting; her stepsiblings, Barbara (Lochie) Whynot, Halifax, Janet Young, Sudbury, Judy Young, Halifax, Donna (Jeff) Allison, Halifax, Michael Young (Elena Hernandez), Glace Bay; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Tanya was a “gift” to her family; she showed us how to love more, to be more patient, she taught us about hope, forgiveness, resilience, how to fight, and in the end she taught us about peace. Our lives will not be the same without her sense of humour and her willingness to give to others, even in her final days. Tanya will always be remembered as a kind and caring person who was an inspiration to many.
Visitation for Tanya will be held Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9 at St. Mary’s Anglican Church with Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Reserve Mines.
Memorial donations in Tanya’s memory may be made to Oncology Unit or Palliative Care Units Glace Bay or the Regional Hospital.
