We, the family of Clayton Reginald Nash regret to announce his passing on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Clayton was born in Glace Bay in 1931 to Effie (Fricker) Nash and Herbert Henry Nash.
Clayton worked in the coal mines for a short time in his younger years but then decided to join the army. After serving our country overseas for over eight years in Korea and Germany, Clayton returned home where he was employed at the refurbishing of the Fortress or Louisbourg. As a Canadian war veteran, Clayton realized that he had the tools he needed to serve his community here at home and he accepted a job with the Glace Bay Police Force. Clayton later went on to graduate from the police academy in Ottawa and after more than 30 years of service to his community, he retired as sergeant.
Clayton married his wife, Gladys King, in 1965 and they went on to raise four children. Clayton was an active member of the John Bernard Croak Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 3 in Glace Bay and was 3rd Vice President at the time of his death. He was a member of the Retired Police Association and was a past board member of the Glace Bay Miner’s Forum. Clayton was also a commercial lobster fisherman who loved to spend time around Glace Bay Harbour. He enjoyed attending the Ashby Legion guitar group and dances at the Sydney Mines Pensioner's Club with his wife, Gladys.
Clayton is survived by his wife of 46 years, Gladys; daughters, Brenda Nash-Innes (Doug), Windsor, Ont., Rhonda Sampson (Curtis), Glace Bay; his son, Ron (Kerri), Glace Bay; and his grandchildren, whom Clayton loved dearly, Natasha, Nicole, Tyler, Emma, Roy, Ryan and Chad. He is also survived by sisters, Jean Malabar, Eileen MacLennan, Barbara Andrews, Ida Kinslow; and brothers, Philip, Reuben, George (Pat), Rev. Art (Emily), Charlie (Marilyn), Les (Ruth) and sister-in-law, Florence ‘Nook’ Nash.
Clayton was predeceased by his mother, Effie (Fricker) Nash, his father, Herbert Henry Nash, son, Brian, brothers, Jimmy, Allie, Jack, Herbie and Wallace and sisters, May, Delores, Margaret and Lillian.
Visitation for Clayton will be held Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at Newsom United Church, Dominion Street, Glace Bay, with Rev. Michael Goodfellow officiating. Clayton’s body will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery, Dominion Street, Glace Bay.
The family of the late Clayton Reginald Nash would like to extend a most sincere ‘thank you’ to the staff of Palliative Care, the VON and all those who visited Clayton and raised his spirits during his illness. We would like to extend a special ‘thank you’ to Debbie Boutilier, Kim Popwell and Pat King-Gillis for always being there in our time of need.
Donations in Clayton’s memory may be made to the palliative care unit, An Cala or the cancer unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
