Catherine MacLean, Herbert Street, Sydney, passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Palliative Care Unit.
Born in New Waterford on August 28, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Ambrose Bernard Currie and Catherine (MacLean) Currie.
She graduated from the School of Nursing at the Grace General Hospital, Newfoundland, where after a brief time of work, returned home to continue her career at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
In 2001, Catherine’s path changed from her caring duties as a nurse to an active roll in volunteer work with the Sydney Unit Society; was a board member with the Cancer Unit; a Breast Cancer Dragon Boat support person and member of St. Joseph’s parish and C.W.L. Her greatest joy was belonging to her beloved choirs.
Catherine is survived by her precious sons, Peter Joseph Maguire and Michael Vincent MacLean; in addition two sisters, Maryena and Colleen; brothers, James and Lawrence; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by brothers, Ambrose Bernard Currie, Dr. Roderick Byron Currie, David Bruce in infancy and by her beloved younger sister, Connie (Currie) Fogarty.
At her request, there will be no visitation, cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Nov, 3 at St. Joseph’s Church at 11 a.m. with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating.
