SHIELDS-BLASER - Mary Margaret Shields-Blaser, age 92, passed away on Monday, October 26, 2009, at the Shaunavon Care Centre, Shaunavon, SK, with Maureen and Caia at her side. Mary was born on August 26, 1917, at Regina, SK, to George and Annie Chambers. She attended Normal School to became a teacher and taught in many small towns in Saskatchewan, some of them would be Southy, Markinch and Orkney. She tried nursing, but found that job wasn’t for her as she was much too sensitive for that position. Mary and William “Bill” Shields were married on July 8, 1946 in Regina, SK. This union was blessed with a daughter, Maureen. After William’s passing in 1986, she remarried on April 2, 1988, to Kas Blaser in Nanaimo, BC. Mary was a wonderful mother, grandmother, teacher and friend. She also had numerous hobbies and interests, some of which were painting, crafts, swimming, walking in the desert, playing in a band on the desert and traveling. Mary enjoyed having fun with family, grandchildren and friends. She was an active member of the Eastern Star for 60 years and had many fond memories of spending winters, for 15 years, in Desert Hot Springs, California, USA. Mary leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Maureen and Grant Morstad, Swift Current, SK; and her grandchildren, Colleen Morstad, Swift Current, SK, Caia Morstad, Calgary, AB and Adam Morstad, Calgary, AB. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill Shields; her husband Kas Blaser; her parents, George and Annie Chambers; a sister, Louise Holmes; and by a brother, Edwin Chambers. She will always be remembered by her family and friends. The Funeral Service was held on Friday, October 30, 2009, at 2:00 pm from the Swift Current Funeral Chapel, Swift Current, SK, with Pastor Christine Ciona officiating. The musician for the service was Arlene Olson with special music provided by Karin Mitchell and Verna Howlett singing, “I’ll Fly Away” and “Until Then”. The eulogy was shared by Elaine Vandenboss. The Interment of Cremains will take place at a later date at the Orkney Cemetery, Orkney, SK. In memory of Mary Shields-Blaser, donations made to the Shaunavon Care Centre Auxiliary or to the Special Olympics Saskatchewan, Attn: Special Olympics Swift Current, 353 Broad St, Regina, SK, S4R 1X2 would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.
