With great sorrow we announce the passing of Antonio ‘Tony’ Michael Basso, on October 29, 2009 at the Glace Bay General Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay on January 12, 1930, Tony was a son of the late Angelo and Clara (Dawe) Basso.
Tony retired in 1995, after 40 joyful years of teaching with the Cape Breton School Board. The first 15 years of teaching were spent at Scotchtown School. During the following 25 years, he taught at the New Victoria Elementary School where he was also vice-principal. Tony loved teaching and was dearly loved in return by the multitude of students whose lives he touched over those many years.
Tony was pleased to serve for over 25 years on the board of the Dominion credit union. He was a member of the Italian Hall in Dominion and, for many years, directed the Italian Community Choir and St. Eugene’s Church Choir. He was an avid reader and sports enthusiast. He spent many of his younger days on the golf course, but he was more recently found surrounded by the many novels he was currently reading.
In addition to his parents, Tony was predeceased by his wife, Leta (Melanson) and his eldest son, Gary.
He is survived by his son, Glenn (Susan), New Victoria; his granddaughters, Daina, Courtney, BC and Alix, Okotoks, AB; his grandson, Gary, Halifax; his nephews, Sheldon (Maurina), Frankie (Mary) and Paul (Margie) Canova, Dominion and his niece, Pauline Collins (Darryl), Moncton.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 3 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion, on Wednesday, November 4 at 10 a.m.
