Passed in: Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

Elizabeth (Gouthro) ‘Lizzy Boutilier
Dominion
The sun rose for Elizabeth on May 02, 1921.
Her sunset came gently on Oct. 29, 2009.
Lizzy is survived by her children, Lucy Lirette, Sheila (Ronnie) MacLeod, Helen (John) MacNeil, Charlene (Blaine) Thomas, Fred (companion Peggy Metcalf).
Also mourning her loss are 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, her sisters Christy Burke, Mary O’Brien, Isabelle Baker and brother Fred “Teddy” Gouthro.
Lizzy will be missed by Anna Boutilier and John Nickelo who affectionately thought of her as their “second mother”.
She was predeceased by husband, Charlie, son-in-law, George Lirette and great-grand daughter, Ariel Lirette.
Predeceased as well by her parents, Nelly (nee Boutilier) and Joe Gouthro, three brothers and three sisters.
Lizzy was a loving spouse for 39 years, and no child could wish for a better mother.
Her way was to have each child believe that “Mom liked me best”, but in her heart there were no favorites. She treated all her children with equal measures of love and respect.
Although she raised her family during hard times, her kindness assured that no one who needed a meal went without, especially at Christmas when plates of turkey were always sent to any lonely person in the neighborhood.
Even as the years took their toll, Lizzy kept her interests in cooking, baking and home decorating. Nothing delighted her more than adding to and rearranging her vast collection of silk flowers.
Great fun for her was playing cards. Her reputation as a card-shark was well earned. Many a challenger sat with her over a crib board only to come away “skunked” at the end of the game. She loved to win and when she won, her laughter was music to the ear.
Mom left a poem that she recorded years ago. She wanted her children to know that “when the time came” we should dry our tears and know that her spirit would always be with us.
Lizzy’s family and friends will miss her greatly and will take comfort from the good memories.
She is at peace with her Lord.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009 from 2 to 4,7 to 9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Andrew Gillies is Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in St. James Church, Gardiner Mines followed by interment in the parish cemetery.
All are invited to join the family for a reception in the parish hall, directly below the church.
