Lewis Frank Whitney - It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Lewis on Saturday, November 5, 2011 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Lewis was a loving son, brother, husband, uncle and great-uncle, and a good friend. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Jessie (MacConechy) Whitney, his wife, Myrtis (Hutt); his brother, Gerald, and his sisters, Gladys (Gervason) and Doris (MacDonald). Lewis is survived by his sister, Margaret (the late Tom) Chambers of Carrolls Corner, Hants County. Although Lewis and his wife, Myrtis had no children of their own, they spent time and attention generously on their many nieces and nephews: nieces, Jessie (Dan) MacDonald, Stewiacke; Joan (Lou) Snyder, Moncton, NB; Jennifer (Mark Setterfield) MacDonald, Massachusetts, U.S.A.; Jessica (Patrick) Van Luxemborg, Kentville; nephews, Paul (Wilma) Chambers, Maryland, U.S.A.; Frank (Debbie) Chambers, Hammonds Plains; Tommy Chambers, Carrolls Corner; Gregory (Barb) Whitney, Coldbrook; Stephen (Levie) Whitney, West Halls Harbour; Jeffery (Shelley) Whitney, Coldbrook; Mark Whitney, West Halls Harbour; Gerrit (Angie) Whitney, East Halls Harbour; Seann Gervason, Coldbrook, and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. Lewis grew up in West Halls Harbour and was a long-standing resident of the area. He enjoyed a long career as a self-employed trucker, maintaining his membership in the Truckers Association of Nova Scotia long after his official retirement. After he had stopped actively trucking, Lewis concentrated on developing his woodlands. He particularly enjoyed his Christmas Tree lots. He took great pleasure in helping people find just the right tree and, for many years, he was a member of the Nova Scotia Woodlot Owners and Operators Association. Lewis was very active in the community of Halls Harbour. He was a life-long member of the Halls Harbour United Baptist Church where, most recently, he played a critical role in obtaining the Veteran's Memorial Stone to commemorate those who fought for their country. In addition to his involvement in the Halls Harbour United Baptist Church, he took great pride in his nineteen years of service to the Halls Harbour District Volunteer Fire Department as a director. Visitation was held from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2011 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where a funeral service and reception was held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 10, 2011 with Reverend Michael Shreve officiating. A private family burial took place in the West Halls Harbour Cemetery. Donations in memory of Lewis may be made to the Halls Harbour Baptist Church, the Halls Harbour District Volunteer Fire Department or to any charity.
